One of the largest universities in the UK, we provide practical solutions for business and use our excellent industry links to influence the teaching of our courses, giving our students the skills and experience employers want. We’re in the UK top 20 for placing students in graduate level work, and, for the last three years have had the highest rise in UCAS applications of all East and West Midlands’ universities

Birmingham City University (abbrev. as BCU; and previously Birmingham Polytechnic and the University of Central England in Birmingham) is a British university in the city of Birmingham, England. It is the second largest of three universities in the city, the other two being the Aston University and University of Birmingham. Established in 1971, it was designated as a polytechnic until 1992, when it gained university status.

The university has eight campuses serving six faculties, and offers courses in art and design, business, the built environment, computing, education, engineering, English, healthcare, law, the performing arts, social sciences, and technology. A proposed £150m campus in the city centre of Birmingham, part of the Eastside development of a new technology and learning quarter, is to open in 2013. The university is a designated Skillset Media Academy, a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning for health and social care, and a member of the million group of New Universities.

Birmingham City University is the West Midlands\' largest provider of higher education for undergraduate study, and its portfolio of part-time courses is among the biggest in the UK. Roughly half of the university\'s full-time students are from the West Midlands, and a large percentage of these are from ethnic minorities. The university runs access and foundation programmes through an international network of associated universities and further education colleges, and has the highest intake of international students in the Birmingham area.

Birmingham City University is one of the biggest universities in the UK. Students are attracted from all backgrounds, from across the region, the UK and the rest of the world – with significant numbers from the Far East, Africa and the Indian subcontinent.

As one of the city’s largest employers, with 2,400 staff and releasing a total of nearly 7,000 graduates into the workforce each year, we are helping to drive forward the region’s economy. We generate a total of £270 million per year for the West Midlands and support an extensive number of jobs across the region.

Teaching and learning remain our core business, producing graduates that are ready for the modern workplace. This is achieved by our ‘learning by doing’ approach which gives students the opportunity to get involved in real-life projects and encourages teaching staff to remain engaged with industry by working closely with employers.

Graduate employability is at the heart of what we do. Our pioneering approach includes a wide range of student clinics and guest lectures, placements, community projects and our unique New Generation Arts Festival, which showcases graduate talent to hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

We have also teamed up with the education think-tank, the Higher Education Academy, to produce ‘future proof’ graduates who can readily adopt their skills and knowledge to the fast-changing workplace. This £300,000 project has produced training and education resources in consultation with employers to help graduates apply their skills and knowledge in the workplace.

Pioneering learning is already a reality at Birmingham City University and students have the chance to face realistic challenges in computer generated environments or access world-class teaching facilities.

This excellence is supported by the Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL), the University’s own learning lab, where a team of dedicated and visionary experts design and implement some of the UK’s most advanced higher education teaching methods.
